Auburn University to host HORSE U workshop for youth
Horse Ownership Resources, Skills and Education for Youth (HORSE U) offers young people a great way to expand their knowledge and skills about horses and other equines. The daylong workshop, sponsored by the Auburn University Department of Animal Sciencesand the Alabama County Cooperative Extension System, will be Saturday, October 11, 2014. The program begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Stanley Wilson Beef Teaching Unit on the Auburn University campus. The $20 registration fee includes lunch and a t-shirt.
The HORSE U program will focus on information and skills important for youth ages 9 and up who work with horses. Participants will attend sessions on applied nutrition, gestation cycle and a trivia session about basic horse knowledge. Hands-on components include basic lameness evaluations, hoof care and injection how-to’s. The sessions are designed to be educational for everyone whether they are involved in showing, speed events or recreational riding.
Part of the day will be spent at the Horse Center, and transportation will be provided for the participants between the facilities. Participants will be required to be dressed appropriately in long pants and closed-toe shoes for working around horses.
High school-aged participants and their parents are also invited to attend a program for prospective students on Friday, October 10 presented by the Auburn University College of Agriculture. Further details can be found on the website.
The deadline for HORSE U registration is September 26. Space is limited to 150 participants. Parents and chaperones must register in order to participate.
