Instructions
  1. Mix ingredients in a large, air tight container with a lid and store at room temperature; do not refrigerate
  2. Stir starter every day for 17 days
  3. On day 18, do nothing
  4. On days 19, 20 and 21, stir
  5. On day 22, stir and add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk
  6. Stir again
  7. On day 27, add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk
  8. Stir
  9. Take out 1 cup three times
  10. Give 1 cup each to two of your friends and keep the remaining cup for yourself and use in the Amish Bread recipes that follow
  11. When you give the starter to your friends, and with the remaining starter you have (not including the 1 cup you will use in the Amish Bread recipe), include the following instructions: Do not refrigerate and do not use a metal spoon when stirring this starter
  12. On day 1 (the day you receive your starter), do nothing
  13. On days 2, 3 and 4, stir
  14. On day 5, stir in 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk
  15. Pour mixture into large glass mixing bowl; mixture will rise
  16. On days 6, 7, 8 and 9, stir
  17. On day 10, stir in 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk
  18. Stir, then pour into 3 (1-cup) containers and give to three friends
