Instructions
  1. Combine butter, sugar and salt in a large bowl
  2. Add the milk and water
  3. When lukewarm, add the dissolved yeast cake and one half cup of flour
  4. Mix thoroughly with a spoon, then add another cup of flour

  7. Turn out on a floured board and knead until smooth and elastic
  8. Return to clean bowl, cover with cloth and let rise until double in bulk
  9. Turn out on floured board and roll to 1/8 inch in thickness
  10. Cut in strips 2 1/2 inches wide and cut again to make squares or diamonds
  11. Cover and let stand 10 to 15 minutes
  12. Fry for about for minutes or until a delicate brown
  13. Serve with maple syrup or milk sauce made by scalding two cups milk in a double boiler to which two tablespoons of butter have been added
  14. Serve hot
