Sour Cream and Ground Beef Layered Casserole

1 pounds ground sirloin or chuck

1/2 medium onion, finely chopped 

2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese

2 medium tomatoes, peeled and diced, or 1 8-ounce can tomatoes

2-3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon sugar

Salt and pepper, to taste

4-ounces cream cheese (room temperature)

4-ounces sour cream

1/3 cup green onions, thinly sliced

1 1/2 cups cooked egg noodles

1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese


Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 13 x 9 baking dish. In a large skillet, cook ground beef with the chopped onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Add tomatoes, parmesan, garlic, sugar, salt and pepper. Bring mixture to boil; reduce heat and simmer 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Transfer meat mixture to greased baking dish; set aside. In a bowl, beat cream cheese, sour cream, and green onions on low speed until smooth. Spread the sour cream mixture over the ground beef mixture in the dish. Top with noodles. Cover with grated cheese and sprinkle with paprika. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until hot and bubbly.
