2 gallons cucumbers, cut into spears
1 pint salt
1 gallon boiling water
1 walnut size lump of alum
2 quarts vinegar
8 pints sugar
Mix salt and boiling water. Pour over pickles and let stand one week. Drain then cover with boiling water and let stand 24 hours. Drain and dissolve alum in boiling wear sufficient to cover pickles. Let stand 24 hours and drain. Mix vinegar and sugar; boil and pour over pickles while it is hot. Drain off and repeat this boiling for four mornings. Pour into jars and can, or may be left unsealed.
