Ingredients
2 1/2 cups flour
3/4 tsp salt
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
3/4 tsp baking soda
1 cup soft butter
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup buttermilk
Frosting:
3 cups sugar
1 stick butter
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup milk
Directions
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time. Combine the flour, salt and soda. Add alternately with buttermilk. Stir in vanilla. Bake at 350 degrees in three 9-inch pans for 30 minutes.
Frosting:
Combine 2 1/2 cups sugar in large sauce pan. Add butter and milk. Bring to boil. Meanwhile in skillet, brown 1/2 cup sugar. When milk mix reaches 200 degrees, pour in caramel sugar. Cook to 230 degrees. Cool to 100 degrees. Beat to thicken. Add vanilla. then frost cake.
