Ingredients
1 package active dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water (105-115 degrees)
5 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons sugar
1 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
Directions
combine yeast and warm water in a one-cup liquid measuring cup' let stand 5 minutes. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar in a large bowl; cut in shortening with pastry blender until mixture is crumbly. Add yeast mixture and buttermilk; stir until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; knead 6-10 times. Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut with 2-inch round cutter and place lightly on greased baking sheets. Bake 400 degrees for 12 minutes or until lightly browned.
Note: Biscuits may be baked 5 minutes then frozen up to 3 months. To serve, remove from freezer, place on lightly greased baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes.
