Orange Slice Cake

1 cup butter or margarine
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup buttermilk
3 1/2 cups plain flour
1 pound chopped dates
1 pound candied orange slices, chopped
2 cups chopped nuts
1 can flaked coconut
1 cup fresh orange juice
2 cups powdered sugar
Cream butter and sugar until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after addition. Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk and add to creamed mixture. Place flour in a large bowl. Add dates, orange slices and nuts, stirring to coat each piece. Add this mixture and the coconut to the creamed mixture. This makes a very stiff dough that should be mixed by hand. Pour bate in a greased and floured 9x13 baking pan. Bake at 250 degrees for 2 1/2 to 3 hours or until testes done. Combine orange juice and powdered sugar. Pour over cake while it is still hot.. Let stand in the pan overnight. This cake keeps well and is better after it stands for several days.
